Our Sorta Off The Grid story starts with us losing almost everything…….
“We don’t really know anything about taking care of ourselves.“ Pretty scary realization for an adult. What if all the modern conveniences we’d come to take for granted suddenly disappeared? What would we do for money? What would we eat and how would we cook? What would we do if we got sick? How would we heat our home during the Minnesota winters?! We started to consider these questions as a result of several aspects of our lives circling the drain.
In the Fall of 2008, the financial services industry we both worked in for close to two decades began to collapse, our real estate investments started to tank, our portfolio began to shrink and the US economy was in a free fall. Since our incomes were cut by three quarters, we started to question how we were ever going to maintain the lifestyle that we had become accustomed to. Beating our heads against the wall, getting angrier by the day and working even longer hours didn‘t help. Our situation didn’t improve over the next two years. Our careers, properties, savings and the economy continued it’s free fall. Resigned to the fact that our lifestyle and priorities needed some serious adjusting, we found some unexpected inspiration… in rural Kansas.
At about this same time one of our son’s and his young family moved to a 100+ acre farm in Kansas. Making the commitment to see our kids and grand kids every other month provided an unforeseen gem – we began to learn about “Farm Life”. Our son is an attorney by trade, but being the resourceful, knowledge seeker that he is, he opened our eyes to many of skills involved in taking ourselves Sorta Off The Grid right here in a Minneapolis suburb. We started to learn about organic seeds, composting, organic gardening, canning, raising chickens, survival supplies and more. We took off from there.
Over the last four years we have become disenchanted with the economy, the media, the poor quality of food on the grocery shelves, our healthcare system and more. Sorta Off The Grid was born as a result of this disenchantment. HOWEVER….
Being Sorta Off The Grid has been the most enjoyable, educational and rewarding experiences of our lives. Our whole family is involved in many ways and our Sorta Off The Grid activities are often spent with family members. It has giving our family bonding experiences that we wouldn’t otherwise have. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve made some mistakes along the way and we don’t pretend to have all the answers. We have a lot more to learn, but we actively seek answers to unanswered questions every day. We have shared many successful and some not so successfully experiences so far, but we have done them as a family.
Our hope is that Sorta Off The Grid provides some solutions to life’s unanswered questions for you and your family.
Take Care and Get Prepared,
Casey and Lynn
